Chapter 4: Representation Reflection

The idea of representation is the idea or the perception of the way something or a group of people are represented, in which, according to the theory of Stuart Hall’s theory is that “there is no true representation of people or events in a text, but there are lots of ways these can be represented” meaning that there is no original meaning of something until a representation of the actual image or concept is done. In this case, in media studies it is mostly used as representation in social construct such as gender, sexuality, race and/or ethnicity. For example, in movies gay people are often perceived as feminine people with feminine gestures, makeup and usually dressed up in women’s clothes and wearing high, tall heels. Thus, the representation of gay people are in ways the stereotypical perception of society towards them. Another example of this is Muslims. We often hear in news about the radical Muslims of ISIS or 9/11 and many, perceived in the generalization as terrorists. Because of this negative representation of Muslims, this leads to the creation of discrimination, most likely caused by the mass media, which control news, newspaper, radio and etc...
