Approaching Media Texts Reflection

The idea of social construct is something or a thought that exist not objectively but through the interaction of humans and through communication. Social construct can be for example race, gender, and sexuality. Social construction relates to media studies through the emphasizing and its concept of the main meaning behind a message or its idea. It gives the viewer or the reader a different perspective of the society. Take for example the word feminism and masculinity. Magazines and movies can both represent the meanings of the two words by images and symbolism by differentiating them. . It can be opposed to ‘boy’ (‘act like a man not a boy’), or to ‘woman’, or to ‘god’, or even to ‘beast’ (‘are you a man or a mouse?’). So ‘woman’ is almost always defined in relation to ‘man’, and ‘femininity’ is usually defined through its perceived differences from ‘masculinity’. Such in, gender roles take a big part in gender construction such as a man wearing a dress or a woman playing soccer.
